Google Gives Nigerian Tertiary Students One Year of Free AI Plus Access
Free AI Plus subscription for Nigerian tertiary students
Google announced that students enrolled in accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education are eligible for a 12‑month free subscription to its AI Plus plan.
The subscription, valued at ₦92,400 (approximately $68.56), unlocks premium AI tools such as Gemini Study Notebooks, Gemini Live, Deep Research, interactive 3D visualisations and Google Lens Homework Helper.
Eligibility is verified through SheerID, a data platform that confirms current enrolment status.
Students who accessed the offer in the previous academic year can renew for another year by re‑verifying their status.
Once activated, AI Plus raises usage limits on Gemini and grants access to advanced features like real‑time voice conversations with Gemini Live.
Deep Research enables users to work through extensive research projects, while custom practice quizzes support exam preparation.
Subscribers also receive unlimited file uploads and 400 GB of Google storage.
Supporting AI skills across the continent
Google’s initiative follows an October 2025 program that gave university students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe a year of free access to Google AI Pro.
In November, Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, pledged $2.1 million to five Nigerian organisations to accelerate advanced AI skilling.
The programme aims to involve at least ten higher‑education institutions, train 50 lecturers and 50 teaching assistants, and reach more than 11,000 students within two to three years.
Olumide Balogun, director for West & East Africa at Google, said, “AI is the defining technological shift of our generation, and for Nigeria, with one of the youngest and most entrepreneurial populations in the world, it is an immediate leapfrog opportunity.”
He added, “By offering 12 months of free Google AI Plus for the second consecutive year, we are removing financial barriers so that Nigerian students can master complex subjects, build in‑demand digital skills, and compete confidently in the global economy.”
Google notes that the AI Plus plan includes a Guided Learning feature designed to help students understand concepts rather than simply supply answers.
Guided Learning was tested by Google DeepMind in June with 1,763 West African students over an eight‑week period.
The study reported learning gains equivalent to 1.2 to 1.7 years of typical progress for participants who used the feature.
Google reports that Nigeria is now one of 27 Sub‑Saharan African countries where the student offer is available.
Early results and future outlook
The combination of free access, higher usage limits and storage aims to lower barriers for Nigerian learners seeking AI‑enhanced study tools.
By integrating Gemini’s real‑time voice and long‑form research capabilities, students can tackle complex assignments without incurring additional costs.
The expanded storage allowance supports the growing volume of AI‑generated content and data that learners are likely to produce.
Google’s continued investment signals a strategic focus on building AI competence in Africa’s youthful population.
Observers note that the scale of the initiative—targeting thousands of students and educators—could influence broader adoption of AI tools in African higher education.
Future monitoring will likely assess how the Guided Learning outcomes translate into academic performance across diverse institutions.
Stakeholders will also watch whether the partnership model with verification platforms like SheerID can be replicated in other regions.
