Backing Ukraine’s Independent Press with AI Support

New AI Programme for Ukrainian Newsrooms

On 7 September 2026 OpenAI, WAN‑IFRA and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) announced a joint initiative to reinforce independent journalism in Ukraine.

The programme is timed amid ongoing conflict and economic strain that have disrupted daily life and media operations across the country.

Its purpose is to equip Ukrainian news organisations with practical artificial‑intelligence capabilities that can improve sustainability, efficiency and resilience.

OpenAI will supply API credits to each participating outlet, enabling them to build custom AI‑driven newsroom tools.

Components: Masterclass Series and Catalyst Support

The effort comprises two complementary tracks: “Newsroom AI” and “Business Transformation.”

Newsroom AI will back selected publishers as they design and roll out AI‑enhanced editorial projects.

Business Transformation will focus on AI‑driven commercial and operational changes that can boost revenue and streamline processes.

The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series builds on earlier WAN‑IFRA and OpenAI collaborations and will bring international experts together to share case studies and implementation tactics.

Topics covered will include editorial workflow optimisation, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, organisational change and responsible AI use.

Following the masterclass, the Newsroom AI Catalyst will provide deeper, hands‑on assistance to ten Ukrainian news organisations.

These ten will identify high‑impact use cases, draft implementation roadmaps and pilot AI solutions tailored to their specific challenges.

All participating entities will receive OpenAI API credits to facilitate the creation of bespoke newsroom applications.

“Ongoing war, economic pressures and disruption to daily lives have created unprecedented challenges for independent media in Ukraine,” said Oksana Brovko, Chief Executive Officer of AIRPPU.

“We believe that AI can greatly assist and provide significant opportunities to strengthen editorial workflows, improve efficiency and better serve audiences.”

“This programme will provide Ukrainian publishers with access to international expertise, practical tools and hands‑on support that will help them turn those opportunities into tangible results.”

“And most importantly—it should give journalists back time to do journalism.”

The joint statement emphasised that independent journalism remains vital for keeping communities informed during war, crisis and uncertainty.

By sharing practical knowledge and facilitating AI adoption, the partners aim to help Ukrainian outlets maintain a robust public record and reach audiences more effectively.
